Survival Tips 4 of 5

Directions By a Watch:

You can use a watch that has hour and minute hands to get an accurate indication of north and south (depending on which hemisphere you are in).  This technique is most reliable on a clear day when you can see the sun, but if it's cloudy, simply look for the brightest area of the sky.

Northern Hemisphere:
- Point the hour hand of your watch at the sun.  South will be halfway between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock.

Southern Hemisphere:
- Point the 12 o'clock mark of your watch at the sun.  North lies halfway between 12 and the hour hand.
